Local Rules for Quasicrystals

چکیده
The relationship of local ordering and long-range order is studied for quasicrystalline tilings of plane and space. Two versions of the concept of local rules are introduced: strong and weak. Necessary conditions of the existence of strong local rules are found. They are mainly reduced to the constraints for irrational numbers related to incommensurabilities of the quasicrystals. For planar quasicrystals the quadratic irrationalities a + b[/~ (a, b ~ ~, D e 7/.) play an important role. For three-dimensional quasicrystals not only quadratic but also cubic irrationalities a + b ~ +c3~/D ~ (a,b,c~tI~, D~TZ) are allowed. The existence of weak local rules is established for almost all two-dimensional quasicrystals based on quadratic irrationalities and for the three-dimensional quasicrystal having icosahedral symmetry.

New classes of quasicrystals and marginal critical states
One-dimensional quasilattices, namely, the geometrical objects that represent quasicrystals, are classified into mutual local-derivability (MLD) classes. Besides the familiar class, there exist an infinite number of new MLD classes, and different MLD classes are distinguished by the inflation rules of their representatives. It has been found that electronic properties of a new MLD class are cha...
متن کاملMagnetically ordered quasicrystals: enumeration of spin groups and calculation of magnetic selection rules.
Details are given of the theory of magnetic symmetry in quasicrystals, which has previously only been outlined. A practical formalism is developed for the enumeration of spin point groups and spin space groups, and for the calculation of selection rules for neutron scattering experiments. The formalism is demonstrated using the simple, yet non-trivial, example of magnetically ordered octagonal ...
متن کاملConstructing Penrose-like tilings from a single prototile and the implications for quasicrystals
We present two sets of rules for constructing quasiperiodic tilings that suggest a simpler structural model of quasicrystals and a more plausible explanation of why quasicrystals form. First, we show that quasiperiodic tilings can be constructed from a single prototile with matching rules which constrain the way that neighbors can overlap. Second, we show that maximizing the density of a certai...

متن کاملThe global long-range order of quasi-periodic patterns in Islamic architecture.
Three decades after their discovery, the unique long-range structure of quasicrystals still poses a perplexing puzzle. The fact that some ancient Islamic patterns share similar quasi-periodic symmetries has prompted several scientists to investigate their underlying geometry and construction methods. However, available structural models depend heavily on local rules and hence they were unable t...
